We had the same circle of friends. After many years of running into each other at parties and shows – one thing lead to another...
How did he pop the question? Were you surprised?
It’s usually a pain when you get caught in the middle of Park Ave. before the light turns, but when we first started dating we didn’t mind 30 extra seconds to spend together while the city passed around us. Matt told me we were going out to dinner for his father’s birthday and that they cancelled last minute. On our walk, back from dinner (which he completely and awkwardly rushed through) he got down on one knee in the middle of Park Ave. and popped the question. I was not expecting it and was on cloud 9. I wanted to go somewhere fancy for champagne, but we came back to our apartment where our friends were waiting with bubbly to celebrate!
Did you have a specific theme in mind for your wedding?
We’re both pretty laid back and love the beach. After looking in Montauk and the Hamptons, we decided we wanted more of an experience, not the big wedding we were being sold on. We decided to do a destination wedding with 50 close friends and family.
Kukua Beach Club in Punta Cana, DR
I am pretty sure I dreamed up the piece I wore for my wedding. I had described it to all of my girlfriends over wine and planning just months before we found AMY O Bridal on Etsy. I showed it to my mom and she immediately ordered it.
What was one of the most memorable moments from your wedding day?
Honestly, the entire thing was amazing from start to finish. One of our best friends officiated on the beach, cocktails around the pool as the sun set, hilarious and touching speeches, amazing food, fire dancers, and lots of laughs and dancing. My husband still says it was the best day of his life. I agree.
Did you go on a honeymoon? If so, where to?
After all our guests had left we stayed in Punta Cana, but went went to Zoetry, which is a quiet, small, beautiful wellness resort. We had a few days to relax, reminisce about the big day, and enjoy being newlyweds for a few days. We’re planning a longer trip to Europe this summer once I am done with school.
Any advice for future brides?
Don’t rush anything! One reason we wanted a destination wedding was because we hear that it is over with so fast. Enjoy every moment. Smile and be happy the whole time (or at least look it). I remember our wedding planner pulling me aside after somebody forgot to do something they oversaw and reminded me that I have so much to be happy for, but also that all eyes are on me. Nobody wants to see a pouty bride rolling her eyes.
Also – if you have a beaded dress LAY IT FLAT. The heavy beading ended up stretching my dress & it was too long on the big day.
